Vaping Laws in British Columbia (BC)

In British Columbia, vaping is regulated by both provincial and federal laws. These rules control who can buy vaping products, what products are allowed, where vaping is prohibited, and how retailers must operate.

For Users (Age 19+)

  • You must be 19 years or older to buy, possess, or use vaping products in British Columbia.

Where Vaping Is Not Allowed

Vaping is prohibited in:

  1. Public buildings and workplaces
  2. Within 6 metres of doorways, windows, and air intakes
  3. All school properties, including parking lots (24/7)
  4. Vehicles carrying children under 16 years of age

Allowed Vape Products

Only vape products containing nicotine or cannabis are legal

  • Flavour-only vape products are not permitted
  • Vape products without nicotine or cannabis are considered illegal (“black market”)

Nicotine Limit

  • Maximum nicotine strength allowed is 20mg/mL

For Retailers

  • Age Verification is compulsory
  • Government-issued photo ID must be checked
  • Sales to anyone under 19 years old are strictly prohibited and can result in penalties if do so.

Promotion and Display

  • Advertising and in-store displays are heavily restricted and follow tobacco control rules

Registration

  • Retailers must be registered with the Ministry of Health
  • Reporting of vape products sold is required

For Schools and Property Owners

  • School Property: Vaping is completely banned at all times, including school grounds and vehicles on school property
  • Business Properties: Property owners must prevent vaping within 6 metres of entrances, windows, and air intakes
