How do e-cigarettes work?

The majority of e-cigarettes are made up of four different parts, including:

  • A liquid solution (e-liquid or e-juice) comprising various concentrations of nicotine, flavorings, and other substances held in a cartridge, reservoir, or pod.
  • A heating source (atomizer)
  • A power supply (usually a battery)
  • A mouthpiece through which the individual inhales

Puffing activates the battery-powered heating device in many e-cigarettes, which vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge. The user then inhales the vaporized aerosol (called vaping).
